James Powell has been an associate member of The Cowhouse for several years.
Jimagination Creations, based in Camborne, has been going for almost nine years now. Jim takes his inspiration from Cornwall and nature in general. He started with boxes and furniture – which are still hugely popular, especially the surfboard furniture and quirky bookcases in the shape of trees or lighthouses or his fun jewellery boxes in the shape of animals. Jim is a self-taught woodworker, learning by designing and making. He diversified into laser technology 3 years ago and now designs and produces an ever growing range of laser cut and engraved products from A5 book covers to keyrings, bookmarks and more recently lampshades.
You can find more of Jimagination Creations work and find out about upcoming events, commissioning a piece and stockists on his website www.jimaginationcreations.com , or on his Facebook and instagram pages
This month we are focusing on Sally A Tully, an Associate member of The Cowhouse Gallery
Sally has been making pottery for 17 years now and has a B.A.(Hons) in Applied Arts so also makes glass and jewellery from time to time and paints using mixed media. Sally’s pottery is predominantly “Raku” fired which means that there is a certain happen chance to how each pot ends up. She could make the same shaped pot 20 times but because of the firing technique every one would come out looking slightly different. Sally compares her fetching the pots out of their sawdust bin to Christmas Day, its very like seeing what presents you have been given by the fire and smoke.
Sally also teaches a Higher Education Access course in Art and Design in Plymouth City College and thoroughly enjoy sharing her knowledge of materials and methods with others and helping set them on the path to their Degrees.
Along with her partner (who is a sculptural potter) Sally and Hazel make up The Alternative Potters and take part in Cornwall Open Studios every year and love people coming and seeing what they produce.
You can find more images of Sally’s work on facebook at
Each month we will be focusing on one of our Associate Members, to tell you a little more about their work. This month it’s
Ali Gibson of Off The Wall Glass.
Ali Gibson designs and creates all the fused glass art and kitchen splashbacks at Off The Wall Glass in Penryn, Cornwall.
Originally working in stained glass and tiffany lampshades Ali moved to cornwall in 2006 and following several years study of fused glass has recently opened a new studio at Grays Wharf, Commercial Road, Penryn. Specialising in large fused glass art panels and kitchen and bathroom splashbacks.
“I have always been attracted to glass objects and can recall the childhood wonder of looking closely at my collection of marbles to see the secret reflective world within, like a dragonfly caught in amber, a snapshot of frozen time. I try to recapture these feelings with my fused glass art and the love of plants and horticulture are a strong influence. The colourful, textured patterns of leaves and tree bark, together with the ever changing seasonal colours of the beautiful cornish panoramic seascapes are a constant source of inspiration.”
You can find a collection of trinket dishes, coasters, dishes and wall art at The Cowhouse Gallery, or visit Ali’s website at www.offthewallglass.co.uk to view a larger range of beautiful glass pieces.
